The Average Joe's Guide to Furnishing Your First Apartment

Designing your home space can be one of the most rewarding tasks you ever undertake. One's home should be their castle, their place of rest, comfort, and relaxation. Though the most important aspect is having a functional living environment, you will find that your life is a lot more pleasant and productive when you have a neat home that is pleasing to your eyes. I remember my college days in my tiny one bedroom apartment when I was good with a television set and futon mattress. Though much hasn't changed in terms of my basic needs I've began to take great pleasure in transforming my living space into a functional themed environment suitable for entertaining guess.

I created this guide to give a few pointers to the t-shirt and jeans guy that may not give too much thought to interior decorating. Don't worry it won't take much effort or cash, you'll still be seen as that same down to earth guy with an even cooler pad. Interior design breaks down into a few basic design elements, as long as you hit on each of these points you will find that you can easily transform you card box and crate studio apartment into a chic minimalist pad oozing with style.

To get started you're going to have to purchase a couple mandatory furniture pieces. This is the first and most expensive element of a themed living space but with a little creativity and effort you can pull this stage off without denting your pizza budget. When it comes down to furniture you really only need two big ticket items - a bed and a couch. Sure you're good with a mattress on a couple of milk crates but for the sake of your mental health and any potential guest you really need a throne to retreat to every night. Though a full bedroom set is nice it's really not necessary to have a well laid out bedroom and you can get away with just a mattress, box spring, bed frame and head board. Shop around and you will find a ton of stylish bed frame and head boards sets for well under 0 dollars, my personal recommendation is the Ikea Malm as it is modern, stylish, and simple enough to use add on pieces from different stores without looking mismatched. Add a few decorative accent pillows and your the man.

The second big ticket item is your couch, while solid leather is always hip and goes well anywhere you'll usually find that a decent soft leather three seat sofa runs 0 - 0 bucks. If it's in your reach definitely go for it, this is the key piece to your entire pad and should get the biggest share of your budget. If you're a little more strapped for cash like I was in my first place micro-fiber is an excellent second choice. It is very comfortable if one for your boys needs to crash on the couch, looks great, feels just like suede, and cost about half of what you will spend on a leather sofa. You may be wondering why I didn't mention a table set, well if you're in a one bedroom or studio apartment you really don't need it, will hardly ever use it, and probably can't afford it. If you simple must have a designated spot to eat I suggest spending a few bucks on small bar style bench and two stools. Keep it simple and save space by sticking it in the corner of your kitchen.

The next step is selecting your add on furnishings. Since you kept it simple and clean with your key furniture pieces it easy to add complementary items that will go well with you main pieces. There are a few small furniture items that are fairly necessary but all are optional so start with what you can afford and add on later. The first thing you should get is something to set your television on so it's not on the floor in front of your couch. If you bought a plasma great, skip this step and stick it on the wall. Otherwise look for a small TV stand or suitable end table, these can be had for - 0 bucks or so brand new if you shop around. A full entertainment center is cool if you can find a good deal on one but these usually are too much of a dent in your budget for the function they provide and take up a lot of room in a small apartment.

Next grab a good sized coffee table to put in front of your couch. It is important to get a sturdy piece that is wide enough to accommodate a couple magazine stakes and few plates because if your anything like me this is exactly where you will be eating most of your meals. To have a nice put together look all you need to do is stay within the same tone and material selections for the auxiliary pieces. If you have a earth tone sofa go for a wood end table as a TV stand and do the same with the coffee table, if it's a black couch go for a more modern black plastic or metal chrome TV stand and a glass (be careful) coffee table. One note on wood, always use the same style. If you have a cherry wood coffee table and a white pine entertainment center you're going to look like you got all your furniture off of Craigslist (which isn't a bad place to find deals by the way).

In the bedroom there are two main add on pieces, the dresser and night stand. Remember these are just add on pieces and if you're on a tight budget I'd start with the later as it is a lot cheaper and provides a lot of function, you really only need a dresser if you don't have any closet space. Yes, you can fit all your socks and boxes in the night stand. Again with these additional pieces reference your big ticket item for color and materials, black lacquer headboard equals black night stand (but lacquer is kind of cheesy, go wood).

Those are the basics, if you followed my steps then you just went from card board boxes to "Yeah, I got my own place...you should come hang" for well under a thousand bucks. Make sure you check out my next article, The Average Joe's Guide to Interior Decorating, where we crank it up a notch and really add some class to the foundations I've laid out. I'm talking drapes, throw pillows, and little glass thingies you put candles in...see you next time!
